Integrated spray hoods are standard in many models, preventing seawater from being inhaled during rough conditions and helping to reduce wind chill and hypothermia. Crotch straps are essential and should always be used, as they prevent the life jacket from riding up or slipping over the wearer’s head in the water. Many offshore life jackets also include built-in harnesses, allowing for tethering to a lifeline - an essential part of safety protocols on offshore yachts, especially when working on deck in heavy weather or at night.

Visibility is another key consideration. Offshore life jackets are typically finished in high-visibility colours such as red, yellow, or orange, and feature SOLAS-grade reflective tape to make the wearer more visible to searchlights and helicopter rescue crews. Furthermore, they often come with whistle attachments and may be fitted with emergency lights or beacons. Some models are compatible with personal locator beacons (PLBs) or AIS man overboard devices, which are highly recommended for offshore sailing, as they dramatically increase the chances of being located and rescued quickly.

Comfort and fit are still vital, especially for long passages. Modern offshore life jackets are designed to be worn for extended periods, with ergonomic shaping, breathable materials, and adjustable straps to reduce fatigue. Despite their robust performance, they’re typically lightweight and low-profile enough to wear comfortably over foul weather gear or thermal layers.

Regulatory compliance is another key element. Offshore life jackets must meet stringent safety standards, such as ISO 12402-2 or SOLAS approval, depending on the type of activity and legal requirements. For commercial seafarers, these standards are often mandatory, but even recreational sailors are strongly advised to choose life jackets that meet or exceed these benchmarks.
